Background:
To become a naturalized citizen of the United States, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) requires that qualified immigrants (known as candidates) pass an interview and exam presented by a USCIS officer. To pass this exam, the current requirements are to:
Respond in English and answer appropriately to a series of questions from the candidate’s citizenship application
Write one of three random civics/history-related sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to write in English
Read out loud one of three random civics/history-related sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to read in English
Correctly read, speak, and write the designated English vocabulary for the interview and exam
CCMM provides a traditional instructor-led course for these candidates to assist them in gaining the skills and knowledge needed to pass the USCIS interview and exam. Currently, the course uses traditional instructor-led recall methods to practice speaking, reading, writing, and interpreting English to pass the exam’s 100 U.S. civics and history questions and answers.
Challenge:
CCMM wants to supplement and update its current traditional course with a digital training solution covering 100 U.S. civics and history questions and answers for use inside and outside of the once-a-week class to provide:
The trainer with a structured, interactive, and visual way to present and coach this content for memory recall
The candidates with additional practice experiences in recalling the content needed to pass the USCIS citizenship interview and exam
Solution:
Design an eLearning instructional solution centered around the U.S. National Mall. This solution would take candidates on a civics and American history virtual tour of U.S. landmarks and memorials throughout the U.S. National Mall to pass the USCIS interview and exam and obtain U.S. citizenship.
The eLearning could be implemented using a variety of approaches:
One-on-one trainer and citizenship candidate (learner)
Self-paced practice for the candidates
Classroom instruction led by the instructor for up to 15 candidates
Objectives:
Answer 100 USCIS questions with at least an 80% accuracy before participating in a mock interview and exam with the instructor
During the mock interview and exam, the candidates will be able to answer at least 6 out of 10 random questions correctly to prepare for the USCIS interview and exam
Results: The stakeholders were excited about the plan and began looking for grants to purchase tablets for the candidates.
Received: Learning Architect Credly Badge from IDOL Courses for this achievement
